SnapTax app lets you file your taxes via your iPhone

OK. This is certainly a sign of the times. I remember having to take my T4 slip to an accountant, wait until he/she was done to see how much dough I was getting back, then sign and wait for the money. It looks like mobile has changed this. Intuit, the makers of TurboTax, have launched a new app called “SnapTax”. I haven’t tried it out yet but it sounds incredibly promising.

Apparently all you have to do is download the free app, snap a pic of your T4 slip with the camera in your iPhone or iPod Touch, wait a few seconds, answer a “few basic questions about your life” and “SnapTax’s state-of-the-art optical character recognition technology automatically populates your tax information into an electronic form using TurboTax software”, then spits out amount you’re getting back or paying. This info then gets uploaded to the governments NETFILE site where you simply tap “File Now”. Done.

Intuit says everything is secure and your info is encrypted. In addition, “no tax information is stored on your iPhone or iPod touch, your information is safe and sound if you misplace or lose your device”. There is a price to all this ease, after tehy get all your important info they as for $9.99 when you the return through NETFILE. Seems like a fair price.

Check it out here from the App Store.
