The internet is rife with more Samsung Galaxy S III rumours today, this time courtesy of Korean newspaper DDaily. Reports are saying that the phone will boast a 4.65-inch 720p Super AMOLED Plus display, which improves on the Galaxy Nexus by being one of the first AMOLED at that resolution without a PenTile matrix. Like the Galaxy S II, which sported a full RGB palette at WVGA resolution, colours on the Galaxy S III will likely be much more vivid, text much sharper, without any of the grain PenTile is known for.
The news that the SGS3 won’t have a 1080p screen may be a disappointment to some users, but the newly spun-off Samsung Mobile Display division is likely taking the conservative route with this one; high-volume production of super high-resolution 1080p screens is likely a year or so off, as that would boast a pixel density of 473ppi. Even as a leader in manufacturing processes, the facilities to produce such high-quality displays are not there. It also bears asking whether we need such high-res displays, as even at 316ppi on the Galaxy Nexus it is difficult to discern individual pixels.
Another Korean newspaper, AsiaE, was told by a Samsung representative that they have already begun testing of the new device and intend to shorten its traditional period to under two months, in preparation for a worldwide launch in either May or June.
Lots of good stuff coming from the Samsung camp, just as HTC is readying its flagship One X for a worldwide release as well. Should be a good year for mobile!
