YouMail cross-platform visual voicemail app coming to Canada on Rogers, Bell and TELUS

In an email to testers today, the popular US-only YouMail visual voicemail is coming to Canada on Rogers, TELUS and Bell. This is significant because it allows you to access your voicemail from any number of places, including the web and across smartphone platforms (especially good if you have more than one phone number and want a single repository of your VMs).

While all three carriers offer a visual voicemail option, they are tethered to a specific phone number and cannot be accessed from the cloud. YouMail has apps for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android and allows you to block messages from specific numbers. The Visual Caller ID feature allows you to see the name, face and city of an incoming caller even if they don’t leave a message, while voicemail transcriptions are human-edited for increased accuracy.

It’s not known when the service will launch in Canada, and some trickery is needed on your phone in order to forward your incoming missed calls to YouMail, but the free service sounds like it’s worth it. We’ll be sure to update you when it launches — at the moment, it’s the next best thing we have to Google Voice, at least in the voicemail department.
