Samsung announces Exynos 4 Quad for its “next Galaxy”

Samsung has unveiled, in a very timely manner, the Exynos 4 Quad SoC that will be present in its next Galaxy phone. The Cortex-A9 chip will be clocked at 1.4Ghz in each core and will be manufactured using the company’s ultra-efficient 32nm High-K Metal Gate process.

The new chip will consume 20% less power and offer twice the performance over what Samsung is retroactively calling the Exynos 4 Dual chip inside the Galaxy S2 (aka Exynos 4210). The new chip will come with a built-in Digital Image Signal Processor for instantaneous photography (much like the technology built into the HTC One X) and be capable of encoding and decoding 1080p video at 30fps.

It’s not yet known which GPU is in the Exynos 4 Quad, though initial gaming benchmarks point to an overclocked version of the Mali-400 MP that debuted in the Galaxy S2. The Exynos 4 Quad is pin-compatible with existing Exynos chips, making it very easy for manufacturers to align it onto existing motherboard designs. Also present is integrated HDMI 1.4 compatibility which will likely be used through a MHL port on the Galaxy S3.

All the pieces are coming together for a phone that is tantalizing the mobile world. When it is announced on May 3rd, you can be sure that everyone, including Apple, is going to be watching Samsung very closely.

Hit up the break for a demonstration video. Are you excited for the Exynos 4 Quad chip to power your upcoming smartphone?
