Google completes acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Sanjay Jha steps down as CEO

Today Google has successfully acquired Motorola Mobility. It’s been 10 months in the making and they’ve gained approval from all countries and even all mobile manufacturers. Google spent $12.5 billion to swallow up Motorola and all their patents. A press release went out that stated the deal “has closed, with Google acquiring MMI for $40.00 per share in cash.”

When the deal was first announced, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC and LG all “welcome the news” of Google’s acquisition of Motorola. Since last August there’s been rumours that of Google giving Motorola favouritism for future Android projects. However, once again, Google decided to declare that nothing is changing to Android, saying this acquisition “will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.”

On another note, Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, will be stepping down but “will continue to work with Google to help ensure a smooth transition.” Stepping in is CE will be Dennis Woodside who was previously President of Google’s Americas region.

Larry Page, CEO of Google, said, “I’m happy to announce the deal has closed. Motorola is a great American tech company, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation. It’s a great time to be in the mobile business, and I’m confident that the team at Motorola will be creating the next generation of mobile devices that will improve lives for years to come.”

No word yet on any other layoffs. As for the future of Motorola… here it is: “Our aim is simple: to focus Motorola Mobility’s remarkable talent on fewer, bigger bets, and create wonderful devices that are used by people around the world.”
