Windows Phone Marketplace reportedly passes over 100,000 published apps

Rogers, Bell, TELUS, WIND, Videotron, SaskTel and Mobilicity have all launched a few Windows Phone powered devices in Canada. The adoption has been slow, according to the latest IDC report Windows Phone has a 2.2% global market share. Unfortunately there’s no pure Canadian stats available, but carriers reported to us that they were “pleased with the sales performance” of Nokia’s Lumia devices.

The Windows Phone Marketplace clearly doesn’t have the number of apps like Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store, but reports show that they’ve just passed over the 100,000 published apps mark. The key word is published apps, not available for download. Over the past 19 months there’s been 100,145 apps published, but currently there’s 88,371 apps available to download. Windows Phone took 14 months to reach 50,000 apps, thus hitting their stride and doubling to reach 100k in another 5 months. The number of apps available to Canadians looks like it’s sitting around 73,000.

In addition, there’s currently 23,825 developers. As to what categories are most popular, “Entertainment” rules with 18,867 apps, followed by “tools + productivity” with 14,591, then “books + reference” with 12,816 apps. 61% of the paid apps in the Windows Marketplace are $0.99, and 7.7% $1.99.
