Samsung hits huge 200 million AMOLED display milestone

Samsung’s Super AMOLED displays power not only its own fleet of smartphones but are purchased by companies ranging from Motorola to HTC. The company recently celebrated a milestone, building 200 million screens since large-scale production began in January 2007.

Around half of those screens were built in the last 11 months — 100 million, if you can’t do the math — due to the recent surge of Samsung Android phones worldwide. AMOLED displays are generally thinner and more power-efficient than their LCD counterparts, and are prized for their colour saturation, viewing angles and contrast levels.

Incredibly, Samsung owns around 97% of the world’s Super AMOLED production, and as manufacturing costs go down the technology will become available to lower-cost smartphones (as well as high-cost OLED televisions, but that’s a few years away).

Samsung’s latest Super AMOLED venture is with the Galaxy S III, which is expected to sell tens of millions of devices in the coming months.
