Socialscope for Android rebrands as Scope, graduates to beta with new look and features

BlackBerry users are likely aware of the nebulous perennial beta app known as SocialScope, arguably the best and most frustrating social networking app on the platform. The Java-based team has since moved on to bigger and more populous things, namely Android, and have rebranded its Alphascope app to ‘Scope’ with a new look and an updated feature set.

In addition to adding Tumblr support, Scope continues to feature Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Foursquare in order to be your one-stop shop for status updates, pictures and videos. In fact, Scope allows you to filter your various social networks by type of media, and supports a nice horizontal navigation technique that feels right at home on Ice Cream Sandwich. You can view based on All Activity, Photos, Videos, Check Ins, Notifications or Messages, running the gamut of what one would typically do on any number of networks.

The UI has come a long way since Alphascope, replete with a lovely white-on-dark palette. The feed stream could use some work, especially since there is no way to adjust font sizes, but that should be corrected in a future build. Also missing are push notifications, though you can set polling times at 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Also, because many users cross-post their content on multiple networks, you end up with a lot of duplication. For example, if your buddy posts an Instagram photo on Facebook, you’ll see the same thing twice. This is the nature of the game, however, but we’d love to see the Scope team work on an algorithm to cut down on bloat.

Scope is still in closed beta, but you can ask a friend to set you up with an invite. If you’re a previous SocialScope for BlackBerry or Alphascope for Android user, you’re automatically registered. If you do get in, let us know what you think!
