Starbucks launches mobile payments for Android devices in Canada

WooHoo! That’s about all I can say as Starbucks has finally brought its mobile payment service, and therefore its official app, to Canadian coffee drinkers. The ability to pay with your iPhone launched last year and has been used millions of times since then.

There are some unique aspects to the app, which is launching in 2.0 today, including the ability to pay from a widget. You can reload or check the balance of any number of cards loaded onto your account, and, if you’re Gold Status, check how many remaining stars you need to earn a free drink.

The app is admittedly a little clunky — icons are not correctly sized on the Galaxy S III, and there are too many buttons and menus in disparate locations, making things a bit confusing at first. The app also defaulted to GBP when it first opened, which is a big localization oversight on Starbucks’ part. We’re sure these issues will be dealt with in future updates, but the fundamentals are there.
