Carbon for Android coming soon, will be free due to Google Play developer restrictions

The team behind the highly-anticipated Carbon for Android, a Twitter app with an aesthetic flair, will be releasing the app for free on Google Play during the week of July 22nd to the 28th. While the team, who live in the United Arab Emirates, would like to charge for the app, Google does not allow for paid apps in that region just yet. Instead of waiting any longer for Google to come through on its promise they will be releasing the app for free with no ads or restrictions.

According to the company’s blog, “So, we finally decided to make it a free app. Yep, a premium free app. No Ads (we believe that Ads cripple the experience no matter how efficiently done, it’s just wrong on an app that users use all day long). Going free, doesn’t mean watering the app down, but a mean to get the app that we’ve been working on for a long time, designs that went through endless iterations and tweaking to be experienced out there by our eager friends who’ve been waiting for months.”

There’s a chance that dots&lines will update the app in the future with in-app purchases (that would be my guess for monetization) allowing them to make some money from the venture. There’s also a possibility of a donate version, which will be distributed outside of Google Play, allowing hardcore followers to send a few dollars their way.

We’re looking forward to trying Carbon for Android, though like most other Twitter apps for Android, if it doesn’t have push notifications it won’t be quite as useful as we’d like. Let’s wait and see.
