Thin Samsung “Youm” displays to begin manufacturing this quarter?

Samsung expects to begin production of its 0.6mm Youm displays this quarter, with a goal of bringing the first products with the technology to market by the end of the year. While the first batch will not be made with a flexible substrate — that will have to wait until 2014 at the earliest — it will allow for AMOLED displays one third the thickness of current mobile screens.

Samsung has shown off prototypes of these flexible displays, but according to those familiar with the matter the technology is not mass-produceable for another couple of years. Even though the earliest models will be inflexible, covered with a layer of glass 0.4mm thick, they will still allow for devices much thinner than current flagship models.

The Korean giant already has the market cornered on AMOLED displays, and we’re hoping that with Youm and HD Super AMOLED Plus the next generation of smartphones can live up to the hype.
