Sharp says it will begin shipping new iPhone displays this month

Sharp did not have a good quarter. It lost $1.2 billion USD and has to cut jobs for the first time in nearly 60 years. If there is one bright spot amidst the ruin it is that the company will begin shipping screens for the new iPhone by the end of August.

Sharp president, Takashi Okuda, told Reuters during the company’s earnings call, that despite a poor quarter it is looking to improve its fortunes by shipping millions of panels for the new iPhone in the coming months. Sharp is not alone in its production of iPhone screens, however; LG Display Corp. and Japan Display Inc. are among the three suppliers entrusted by Apple to deliver for its iPhones and iPads.

The new iPhone is expected to be 4-inches diagonally with a resolution of 1152×640. Due to the slimness of the device, Apple has purportedly engineered the display to use in-cell panels, meaning that the touch sensors will be integrated into the LCD itself.

Apple is expected to schedule a press conference for September 12th to announce, among other things, the new iPhone.
