Apple releases iOS 6 beta 4 to developers, removes standalone YouTube app

Today Apple released iOS 6 beta 4 to developers for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2, iPod touch and the Apple TV over the air. The complete change log is extensive as it involves fixes and addition to everything from the Address Book, shared calendar alerts, iCloud, Passbook, iTunes, Safari and Maps.

Probably one of the most notable change is the exclusion of the YouTube standalone app. This has been completely removed from the OS and not even a choice as a default option. The official statement from Apple is that their agreement with Google ended and choosing not to renew. Google is apparently working on a new YouTube app for iOS, but in the meantime people who want to access YouTube will have to go through web to get it.

Apple noted that “Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

However, if you do have a device with an older iOS, Apple stated that it “would remain on iOS 5 and older.” In addition, iOS 6 will also remove Google Maps to include Apple’s new 3D Maps application. Perhaps this is the year that Apple decides to live by the words of Steve Jobs: “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product.
