Motorola finally goes live with “Unlock My Device” site

A year ago Motorola promised users that they would find a way to unlock the bootloaders on their devices. Today, the site went live. That’s the good news. The unfortunate news for us Canadians, and other countries, is that the list of supported devices is incredibly limited. Currently the only smartphones to make the list are the Spring Photon Q 4G LTE and the Motorola RAZR developer edition. For us Canadians, the Motorola XOOM Wifi has made the cut for an unlockable bootloader. Motorola does state that “additional devices will be added progressively,” but doesn’t give an indication of which ones.

Before you even get started Moto places a massive warning, which might scare some away, that your warranty will be null and void and they are “against unlocking the bootloader and/or modifying or altering a device’s software or operating system. Doing so can have unintended, unforeseen, and dangerous consequences, such as rendering the device unusable, violating applicable laws, or causing property damage and/or bodily injury, including death.”

As for unlocking the bootloader, there’s a few steps, such as installing fastboot and the Android SDK, and installing the latest Motorola USB drivers. Hopefully more devices will be added soon, specifically for the RAZR, ATRIX, ATRIX HD.
