MeeGo mania: Jolla’s phones will support Android apps, N9 gets first taste of Jelly Bean

A couple MeeGo-related stories for you today. First, it seems that the newly-enfranchised Jolla, offshoot of Nokia’s MeeGo division, will be releasing a new device with Android on the brain. Due to the severe lack of native apps supported by the Linux-based mobile operating system, the company’s CEO Jussi Hurmola told a Finnish magazine that they would enable Android apps to run on the devices using OpenMobile’s ACL Technology, similar to how RIM gets Android apps to work on the PlayBook. This will allow for native-like application, though performance will depend on the speed of the hardware.

We’re still not sure whether Jolla will release its first MeeGo device in 2012, nor do we know whether it will leave Europe (or even Finland). We’re pretty excited to see where this is going, though, as MeeGo has always been a very intriguing prospect.

In terms of legacy MeeGo hardware, the N9 continues to be used in the context of developer triumph. A recent video released shows it running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with full hardware acceleration, sound and video support. While it won’t function just yet as a phone, WiFi seems to be capable of transferring bits, and the whole thing just makes us excited.
