Passbook is coming: NFC chip reportedly spotted in new iPhone casing

It seems like years since we’ve reported about the new iPhone, aka iPhone 5, but as we near September 12th and Apple’s official announcement, more peeks into the small additions to the phone are coming to light. The latest leaked parts to hit the web, courtesy of Apple.pro, show off what looks to be a NFC chip along the aluminum frame, near the top.

Due to the centring of the phone’s front-facing camera module, Apple found ample space for the inclusion of a NFC chip. This could be a catalyst for the adoption of mobile payments, especially as the company launches Passbook, a way to store loyalty and credit card information securely on your mobile phone. The app is currently a placeholder on the iOS 6 beta and is expected to be activated when Apple debuts the new iPhone. What this will mean for Passbook compatibility in the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S remains to be seen, though it’s expected that partial functionality will be given through Bluetooth.

Whether Passbook will be geographically-limited like Siri was in its earliest iterations remains to be seen, but we’re sure Apple is going to push very hard to have its standard adopted over competing platforms.
