Pinger for iPhone launches in Canada with free calls and texts to any number in North America

Pinger is a free calling and texting service that has grown into the biggest product of its kind in America. The company’s iPhone app is launching today in Canada, extending the availability of its free calling and texting service even further.

Like Dell Voice, Vonage Mobile and textPlus, Pinger registers your iPhone’s number and allows you to call other users for free over WiFi or a cell connection. It also provides you with a free outgoing number you can use to call landlines, cellphones and other numbers in North America for free. Any outgoing calls made from the app will originate from this number, and will be used as the call display for outgoing texts. You can buy minutes for use outside North America — 100 minutes for $1.99 is the standard rate — and you can text for free in 35 countries.

The interface is clean and sparse, though it is unfortunately ad-supported. While it doesn’t offer much new compared to other apps in the category, it is essentially the WhatsApp of free call & texting apps and has a much wider audience than any app currently available to Canadians.

The company says that an Android version is launching soon, so stay tuned for that.
