Bell and Virgin expand LTE network into Thunder Bay, Ontario

Bell and Virgin Mobile announced today that their LTE networks are now live in Thunder Bay, Ontario. With theoretical maximum speeds of up to 75Mbps, and real-world speeds of 12-25Mbps, this is the first of Bell’s major expansion projects into Northwestern Ontario. According to a release issued today, “Bell is just starting our expansion into North Western Ontario, offering coverage that is part of what is already Canada’s largest, blazing-fast, 4G coast-to-coast network. We plan to continue to build out the network in North western Ontario over the next few years.”

It looks like the core portion of Thunder Bay has 4G LTE turned on, while the greater TB area has access to Bell’s HSPA+ network with theoretical maximum speeds of 21Mbps. The expansion also applies to Virgin Mobile.
