Facebook has over 600 million active mobile users, one billion users overall

Facebook reached a pretty hefty milestone today: 1,000,000,000 active users. One billion. That’s one in seven people in the world using Facebook. That’s the equivalent of nearly every person in China using Facebook. That’s… a lot of Facebook people.

But the most staggering statistic is that there are 600 million active mobile users on the service, equating to over 60% of the entire user base. That means that from smartphones to feature phones, Facebook is about as ubiquitous as any social network could be. Considering it didn’t exist ten years ago, one in seven people on the planet is extraordinary growth.

The number isn’t dramatically different than the 543 million active mobile users announced during the company’s last quarterly earnings in at the end of June. But the number of mobile users now comprises a comfortable majority of all Facebook users, and that the company is dedicating itself to refocusing on its mobile offerings — releasing a native iPhone app and, soon, a native Android app — speaks to the importance of smartphones in its business plan.

It’s important to note that many users don’t own desktop computers, and rely on their phones entirely to access the web, including Facebook. Facebook’s growth may be slowing, but it will be interesting to see how quickly its mobile user base grows in relation to its overall numbers.
