Opera Mobile 12.1 released for Android with support for new web standards, extra speed and some new tricks

There’s no shortage of third-party browser choices in Google Play, and the company is pushing hard for Chrome to be the de facto choice for most users purchasing new phones. And while we can’t blame The Goog for wanting its excellent Chrome software on as many phones as it can get, Opera Mobile has slowly been making headway with its latest app, and its latest version is not only fast and beautiful, but highly standards-compliant.

One the improvements to the app is what Opera is calling “fraud protection,” or a malware spider sense of sorts. Any page that has been flagged as malicious by Opera or the community will issue a warning before allowing you to load the page.

We also have new web standards, including Google’s SPDY, an improvement over the original HTTP protocol that has been adopted by many websites, including Twitter and Gmail. There’s also support for WebSockets, which speeds up direct communication between your browser and the web server.

Then there is support for new CSS and HTML5 features, including HTML5 Drag-and-Drop, which has been adopted by many cloud services on their mobile pages.

Opera Mobile is fully compatible with ARM and x86-based chips, and is available for download from Google Play.
