700,000 apps are now available for Android

During Apple’s September iPhone 5 event they announced that the App Store had 700,000 available apps. Impressive number and one that Apple’s been banking on for years. Now, according to a report in BusinessWeek, the race for app dominance is finally neck and neck.

On September 26th Google stated that 25 billion apps have been downloaded and there were 675,000 available Android apps.  This number increased by 25,000 over the past month and Google has now declared that they too have about 700,000 available Android apps in Google Play.

As for other smartphone manufacturers app stores, RIM’s BlackBerry App World currently has over 100,000 apps and gearing up for their big BlackBerry 10 launch in Q1 2013. Microsoft announced yesterday that their Windows Phone Store has 120,000 apps. Quantity over quality, or quality over quantity?
