Viddy is one of those apps that needs to be used to understand its potential. Lots of companies have made the “Instagram for video,” but few of them have put together apps that work well on their respective platforms, hewing closely to the design ethic of each one.
After releasing an app for iOS, the team found that while growth was steady, it wasn’t where it wanted to be. Viddy for Android has been a long time coming, and some may think it poses no chance against YouTube, but its 15-second limit, quick-apply filters and easy-to-use soundtrack tool will appeal to a different class of users.
The app is attractive, with three main colums — Following, Featured and Likes — which can be swiped through in a familar Holo-esque manner. There is a top-left navigation bar for more in-depth pursuits, such as Hot, News, Profile, Search and Settings.
The app integrates with Facebook and Twitter, but it’s always trying to get users back into the app as soon as possible. The stream is intuitive and videos loads quickly, but the biggest drawback to adoption will be how long videos take to upload, especially since all the encoding is done on the app itself. To this end, Viddy has limited the number of Android devices it supports based on performance chipset, though the number is still a healthy 757, including the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.
