Dev-Team claims to have untethered jailbreak for new iDevices, just waiting for iOS 6.1

If there’s one thing we don’t want, it’s to fall for another insidious fake untethered jailbreak rumour. So it’s with great relief that the news we’re about to share comes straight from Dev-Team members, the folks behind all previous (legitimate) iOS jailbreaks.

According to two members of the Dev-Team, pod2g and planetbeing, substantial progress has been made in finding exploits in the latest iOS devices, including the iPhone 5, iPad mini and iPad 4 running iOS 6. While an untethered jailbreak exists for the iPhone 4S and iPad 3, it requires the user to be on iOS 5.1.1.

The Dev-Team was rightfully skeptical of last month’s jailbreak claim, which was apparently the work of one Canadian; it turns out the person behind the dupe was ostensibly teaching us a lesson is gullibility and humility. Or he was just being a jerk.

The upcoming untethered jailbreak hasn’t been announced, but has been repeatedly hinted at by the two aforementioned individuals. It could come as early as Februray, when Apple is expected to launch iOS 6.1, but at this point we’re just hoping for a public release at all.

If you’re rocking an iPhone 5, iPad mini or iPad 4, will you be jailbreaking your device when it becomes available? Or, as one commenter in this excellent Techcrunch article points out, have most would-be jailbreakers made the, ahem, break for Android?
