Jelly Bean is now on 16.5% of Android devices, Ice Cream Sandwich drops slightly from last month

Another month, another Android version breakdown. As of March 4th, 16.5% of devices that connected to Google Play were running Android 4.1 or Android 4.2 — 14.9% the former, 1.6% the latter. Ice Cream Sandwich comprised 28.6%, down slightly from the previous month.

That decrease is due to a 2.9% surge in Jelly Bean users, most of which came from Android 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 as many flagship devices that launched with ICS have been recently upgraded.

Gingerbread dropped yet again, down from 45.6% to 44.2% in the month. Froyo and Eclair, Android 2.2 and 2.1 respectively, also dropped slightly, but Donut remained static at 0.2%. Honeycomb also seems to be steady at 1.2%.

Overall it looks like things are progressing fairly nicely for the newer versions of Android, though I’d love to see Gingerbread drop more quickly. Unfortunately it appears that for many devices, Gingerbread is the end of the road, and most users will have to wait until the end of their contracts for a new device and a new Android version.
