HTC to offer a $650 One Developer Edition with unlocked bootloader and SIM slot

htconehandson-2HTC is releasing the One this month or next — depends on when you ordered it — but one thing we hadn’t heard is whether the company would be catering to ravenous developers who want to use it for app and custom ROM development.

Today, the company announced the HTC One Developer Edition, complete with unlocked bootloader and SIM slot. Unlike previous HTC phones, which allow the bootloader to be unlocked through HTCDev, the One Developer Edition will be S-Off, meaning practically anything is flashable, including kernels and engineering bootloaders. It also means that messing around with it won’t void the warranty, which is still a point of contention on carrier-sold devices.

The $650 DE will sport the same hardware as the carrier-sold version in Canada, except for its larger 64GB internal storage, and will support Rogers/Bell/TELUS 3G and LTE. Unfortunately for WIND and Mobilicity users, this isn’t a pentaband 3G device. It does, however, sport some of the best specs for a current-market device, though a premium of over $300 from the Nexus 4 may be a bit steep.

– 4.7-inch 1080p display
– 1.7Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor
– 2 GB RAM
– 64 GB of storage
– SIM and bootloader unlocked
– Open APIs for Bluetooth Low Energy, Infrared, and more
– Front-facing stereo speakers
– Two dual-membrane microphones for recording

HSPA/WCDMA: 850/1900/2100 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
LTE: 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz

No word on whether the One DE will be coming to Canada — HTC claims it will be available only to those with a valid US Zip Code — but we’re hoping for some good news.
