Rogers “suretap” mobile payment system certified for BlackBerry 10 and select Android devices

Rogers mobile payment service “suretap” launched November of last year. The media event was held in Toronto at a local Tim Hortons and was dubbed as being the first place in Canada to accept a credit card payment via a mobile device. Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield was on hand and purchased 3 coffees for $5.80. There’s limitations to suretap, first you need to be a Rogers customer with an NFC-enabled SIM, have a BlackBerry Bold 9900 or Curve 9380, plus have a CIBC credit card.

Rogers promised that more devices will be added in 2013, namely those on Android and Windows Phone. Today, Rogers has announced that they’ve certified suretap for select Android device and BlackBerry 10 smartphones. This means that devices are ready for apps to be developed, but no word on when the apps will be live for consumers to use. Over the weekend CIBC stated that the CIBC Mobile Payment App is coming soon. The new devices that have been certified for suretap on Rogers is the BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry Z10, LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II.

As for adoption, Rogers stated in the press release that “tens of thousands of suretap SIM cards are in market and hundreds of thousands of suretap mobile payment-ready devices are being used by Canadians.” There is no specific word on the exact number os Rogers subscribers who actually use suretap, nor the total dollar amount that suretap enabled devices are making. Finally, Rogers gave no indication of when Windows Phone devices will receive certification.
