If you visit music.twitter.com today, you’ll see the Twitter logo with a #music hashtag next to it, followed closely by a “Coming soon” label. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, reports indicate that the social media giant, which boasts 200 million active members, will be collaborating with big-name music startups like Vevo, Rdio, Spotify, Soundcloud and more. According to sources, Twitter Music will be released as a separate app, allowing users to search for artists and music through the network’s extensive database of links.

Last year, Twitter purchased San Francisco music startup, We Are Hunted, which specialized in troving the ‘net for the best and most up-and-coming artists and tracks. Much like Hype Machine is a consolidator of the best music posted on blogs, Twitter Music could use We Are Hunted’s algorithms to determine what people are saying about various artists on Twitter and give users the option of listening to them in a stream. And with integration into legal streaming services’ APIs, all conduct will (hopefully) be legal.

Current Rdio and Soundcloud users will have undoubtedly seen the services’ integration into Twitter Cards, which allows the playing of tracks, albums and playlists from inside Twitter itself.

Twitter Music is expected to launch in the very near future, as soon as this week, but it’s not known whether, like Vine, the app will initially be iPhone-only or if it will extend to Android and other platforms at launch.
