Samsung TecTiles 2 announced, replaces original NFC tag

Samsung is announcing a new version of its NFC tag that is compatible with the Galaxy S4. Its TecTile tag was a fun way to add functionality to a NFC-capable smartphone by programming specific commands into the union of phone and tag.

The first TecTile used a non-standard NFC technology that has since been deprecated in most smartphones. Newer devices employ the NFC Forum tag format, which should continue to be used throughout the industry.

Samsung is bringing out a TecTile 2 tag to replace the original, with a new design and the ability to read-write from the Galaxy S4.

Samsung is introducing TecTile 2, an update to the original TecTile NFC programmable tags, which will be available in the coming weeks. TecTile 2 will use the current NFC technology on the market, allowing Samsung customers to further incorporate NFC into their daily lives and to use with the latest Samsung Mobile products and services, including the Galaxy S 4.

As industry standards continue to evolve, Samsung remains committed to meeting those standards and adapting its technologies if necessary.  Samsung customers can also fully utilize TecTiles 2 with existing Samsung Mobile NFC-enabled Android smartphones currently in market.

While not a well-known product category here in Canada, the prevalence of NFC tags has increased in the past year, buoyed by the popularity of NFC-based smartphones that run Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10.
