HTC said to release 5.9-inch device with Snapdragon 800 later this year to take on Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3

A few days ago, we heard about HTC’s upcoming “phablet,” codenamed T6, which is expected to come out later this year. We’re now hearing that HTC is testing the phone and it will be 5.9-inches in size, identical to the upcoming Galaxy Note 3.

News of such a large screen device comes from Laura Chen, BNP Paribas Securities Taiwan analyst, who posits that three devices are in the works from HTC: the aforementioned phablet; a smaller version of the HTC One, codenamed M4, which will be arriving sometime in June; and a new version of the Butterfly, which was HTC’s first 1080p device. Considering the Butterfly was subsumed by the One so quickly after its launch, it’s unclear whether this new version will be limited to specific markets or if it will succeed the One as HTC’s flagship (unlikely).

Chen says that the upcoming phablet will also be powered by a newer processor than the one currently available, likely Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 SoC. This will be a significant upgrade over the current Krait offerings, with a brand new Adreno 330 GPU and faster per-core CPU speeds.

She also positions HTC as being in recovery, saying that “the worst is over” for the Taiwanese manufacturer. While their recovery is in its early stages, it appears that after selling 5 million Ones and improving output supply, 2013 may indeed be the beginning of a renewed HTC and a true competitor to Samsung.
