Twitter for iPhone and Android get updated Tweet composer with live previews, wider timelines and expandable notifications

Twitter has updated its iOS and Android apps with a focus on improving the tweeting experience.

The main improvement here is a new Tweet composer screen, which shows live previews of your content plus any photos or links you’ve appended. There’s also a new, wider timeline that shows more content on a vertical screen. You can append photos quickly with immediate access to your gallery, and location data is also easier to inclue.

Twitter is pushing to make its social network more local and immediate by encouraging users to follow their friends. This feature has been there for a long time by means of scanning a user’s address book and matching phone numbers or names with the appropriate Twitter account, but it is being more widely featured now. A new option of being notified when one of your friends joins Twitter will make that a big easier.

The Android app has also been gifted with a long-requested feature, expandable notifications. As more users adopt Jelly Bean, lack of expanded notifications has been a sore spot. You can now see the avatar of the person you’re following or who has tweeted directly at you, and multiple notifications are grouped together for quick preview.
