Fido expands service into Maritime provinces, calls itself a national player

Rogers-owned Fido is moving into the Maritimes next month, setting up five kiosk stands in Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John, and 50 other points-of-sale throughout the eastern provinces through third-party partners like GlenTel, Best Buy, Walmart, Loblaws and the Apple Store.

Starting June 14th, Fido will consider itself a national player, with service from the west coast to the eastern fringes, piggybacking off Rogers’ 3G and LTE networks in these regions. Fido has continued to remain autonomous throughout the years, but is no longer considered a discount carrier: it’s plans, especially for more expensive devices, similar to its parent company’s, but emphasize talk and text over large amounts of data usage.

Fido does boast some of the most loyal customers in Canada, and its customer service is often used as an example of how carriers should treat their clients. The company also has an accessible and competitive pre-paid lineup. Every plan offers international texting, voicemail and national calling, but most carriers are meeting those standards these days.

When service rolls out on June 14th, LTE service will be available in Halifax, Sydney, Kentville, Moncton and Bathurst. It will expand to Saint John, Fredericton, Miramichi, Charlottetown, Truro, andNew Glasgow by the end of 2013, though these areas will all be served with 3G connectivity until then.
