BlackBerry 10.2 caught on video before release later this year

BlackBerry 10.1 was recently released for the company’s touchscreen flagship, the Z10, and came preinstalled on the QWERTY-enabled Q10. It contained many improvements over the shipping BlackBerry 10 software, including HDR photos, enhancements to text input and selection, and a number of upgrades to performance and battery life.

The company acknowledged that the next update, BlackBerry 10.2, will be arriving later this year, further sharpening the claws of its new operating system. Moving ahead with its potentially life-saving BBM features, BBM Channels will be pre-installed on the new OS version alongside a revamped BBM app, and users will be able to access Emojis from within messaging apps. BB 10.2 will also come with level one notifications, indicating that more customization will be possible for apps that aren’t natively delivered in the Hub.

One of the nicer inclusions is a new “waiting” icon, which replaces the stock experience in 10.1. Also improved is the Clock app with a host of new features and what looks like the option to set time-based reminders and multiple alarms.

It’s also likely we’ll see the introduction of Headless Apps in BlackBerry 10.2. This feature was promised at BlackBerry Live and allows developers to tap into background updates without being open as an Active Frame. This is one of the biggest limitations for multitasking in BB10 at the moment, especially for Android-based apps that don’t have access to the same feature set as their native equivalents.

With Headless Apps, an app that isn’t in the Hub will be able to receive push notifications and perform background updates without being explicitly opened by the user.
