Netflix launches account profiles for multi-user homes, coming soon to mobile apps

Netflix has launched the ability to create individual account profiles for those who share a single login but don’t want recommendations streams to cross.

Due to Netflix’s emphasis on discovery, accounts with multiple users were often being recommended disparate, opposing movies and TV shows based on history. The ability to separate profiles allows families or friends to maintain separate, more accurate recommendations lists. The feature is optional and will not affect current users who do not wish to transition.

The feature is rolling out to the company’s desktop apps, such as the web, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Apple TV, but will soon arrive on iOS, Android and, presumably, Windows Phone.

Also set to arrive this summer is something called My List, an evolution of the US-only Queue feature which allows users to recall, and save, content for future viewing.
