Nokia ‘Bandit’ screenshot leaked, shows off 1080p Windows Phone GDR3 home screen

Windows Phone is in for an overhaul later this year, and not merely one related to a certain acquisition: Microsoft is set to release GDR3 with support for quad-core Qualcomm chips and 1080p displays, among other smaller improvements.

A leaked screenshot purporting to be from Nokia’s upcoming 6-inch ‘Bandit’ device shows a more spacious home screen and updated icons, including a refreshed Nokia Camera. There’s also something called ‘Storyteller’ which looks to be a journalling app of some kind.

It’s unclear when the update will begin rolling out, but we’re fairly sure the base software will be announced alongside new Nokia hardware later this year.

With the impending acquisition of Nokia’s Devices & Services division, Microsoft will have much greater control over the melding of hardware and software, though it was apparent that Nokia and Redmond got along just fine, collaborating on new features and designs, up ’til now.

We’ll likely have to wait until next year for any major updates to Windows Phone 8, which will come in the form of WP 8.1; GDR3 is expected to bring orientation lock and a Driver Mode, along with requisite bug fixes and performance improvements, in addition to 1080p support.
