Pebble pushes its iOS 7 update along with new firmware

Though the company announced a slew of new software features for iOS 7 devices last week, including alerts for any Notification Center messages, that update is beginning to roll out today.

The new iOS app looks and feels identical to the old one, but allows users to customize which apps send notifications to the watch. Pebble quietly turned on Bluetooth LE to plug into new notification APIs made available to developers in iOS 7, and goes back and forth between Bluetooth 2.0 and LE depending on the use case. In fact, users will see two Pebbles connected to the iPhone at the same time, one regular and one Low Energy.

In order to facilitate notifications for third-party apps, certain conditions need to be met, including enabling of banners within the iOS Settings app. Pebble’s Help Centre goes into more detail, but the short version is that you have to be able to see the notification on your phone to see it on the Pebble. This includes banners, alerts, badge app icons, or alert sounds, but does not have to be all of them.

The new feature will only work when the smartwatch firmware is boosted to version 1.13, which should prompt the first time the app is opened after updating.
