Google begins promoting apps ‘Designed for Tablets’ in the Play Store

If you’re an Android tablet owner — of a new Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, perhaps — you’ll see a new set of apps when opening the Play Store this morning.

As explained last month, Google has begun filtering non-tablet apps and promoting those that take advantage of the larger Android tablet ecosystem. This makes things much easier for tablet owners who don’t want to wade through the hundreds of thousands of phone apps just to find the handful that look great on the bigger display.

Subsequently, apps that are made for phones will be ignominiously singled out, ostensibly encouraging app developers to create tablet-specific versions.

Android still has a long way to go to catch up to the iPad in terms of tablet app quality, but this is a good first step.
