Samsung reportedly working on a 20MP smartphone camera for late 2014

Samsung indicated that 16MP camera sensors will become the new industry norm at its first Analyst Day back in November, and recent rumours suggest that the Korean company will back up the claim with the Galaxy S5 in early 2014.

But while up to 25% of Samsung’s smartphone releases in 2014 are expected to be 16MP, that’s not stopping the company from forging ahead with new technologies (and specs). According to insider reports from Korea, Samsung is prepping a 20MP smartphone camera sensor for release in the second half of 2014.

A 20MP smartphone release is made possible in part through Samsung’s recent exclusive agreement with Sony for high megapixel CMOS image sensors, as well as their much touted new ISOCELL imaging system, which prevents light loss as the physical pixel sizes within the sensors decrease.

Samsung may ship as many as 90 million 16MP smartphones in 2014, but if you’re one who requires bleeding edge camera tech, you may want to hold off until the second half of the year.
