Lycamobile would like to be operating in Canada ‘by February 2014’

Earlier this year there were rumours that Lycamobile was preparing to enter the Canadian market. The company has over 30 million customers in 17 countries and provides low-cost calling and text plans. It’s expected they’ll set up shop in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal as an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), which is similar to how PC Mobile, SpeakOut Wireless and Petro-Canada Mobility operates.

While we can’t see Lycamobile launching its service in Canada in the next couple weeks, on their company site Subaskaran Allirajah, Group Chairman, states that they “would like to be operating by February 2014 to include Canada.” No other details of which Canadian carrier they’ll partner up with, but we’ve reached out to the company for more details.

With the upcoming 700 Mhz spectrum auction in January, plus the CRTC’s crackdown on roaming rates, 2014 is already shaping up to another competitive year in wireless.
