It’s too cold in Toronto (and much of Canada) today, but the Android weather app game is heating up. (Sorry, that was terrible.)
Minimal and fluid iOS app, Solar, has made its way to Android this month, bringing gesture-based navigation and some slick typography to the table. After adding a city (or using GPS to auto-locate), Solar displays the current temperature in front of a background gradient that changes according to the waning of the sun, while inclement weather is treated to a beautiful array of animations.
Swiping down on the screen reveals the three-day forecast, while scrolling up cycles through the next 24 hours of weather in real-time. It’s a neat conceit and works very well with bigger-screen Android devices.
Unfortunately, Solar isn’t for the data hoarders, those who want to ascertain wind direction, sunrise times and precipitation numbers. It’s quality over quantity, meant for those who want to get in and out with few visual distractions. That it’s free and ad-free is a bonus, but it’s worth checking out for anyone running Android 4.0 and above.
