VLC for iOS updated with new interface, brings Dropbox and Google Drive streaming

VLC, the open-source media player that began its life on the desktop, has received a new interface on iOS with version 2.2.0.

The app was removed from the App Store in 2011 after the open-source port reportedly violated the GNU General Public Release, according to a lead VLC developer and Nokia employee. It returned to the platform in mid-2013 with a gorgeous new interface and cloud syncing.

Now, version 2.2 adds cloud streaming from Dropbox (without having to cache the content) as well as integration with Google Drive, for good measure.

The app also looks better, thanks to an iOS 7-friendly flattening, and a new startup tutorial introduces users to VLC’s nuances. With improved WiFi upload and wider streaming support, VLC is no longer encumbered my drag-and-drop iTunes policies; apps like Synology’s DS Video, and other UPnP-supported programs, can link directly to VLC for streaming.

Overall, a big update for the best media player on iOS. And, as expected, it continues to be free.
