RBC says its mobile payment service will expand to ‘more devices in the spring of 2014’

A couple weeks back we let you know that RBC and Bell have teamed up and launched its “mobile commerce service” called the RBC Wallet. This allows RBC and Bell customers to pay for small ticket items — either debit or credit via Visa payWave or Interac Flash — from their Galaxy S III or Galaxy S4.

According to press release this morning, RBC’s Dave McKay stated that “We are excited to bring the RBC Wallet to RBC and Bell Mobility clients… Our vision is for the RBC Wallet to work on all phones, with all carriers, and include value-added services and solutions – all safely secured in RBC Secure Cloud. As technology is rapidly changing, we chose a phased approach, enabling us to bring this exciting new technology to a portion of our clients right now, with many enhancements to follow.”

So it certainly seems that this service by RBC is in its infancy and one of the major gripes with customers is the limiting option to have it available on one carrier. No indication on when it will expand past Bell to other carriers (possibly TELUS), but RBC also noted that “the RBC Wallet will be adding MasterCard and be available on more devices in the spring of 2014.”
