As expected, Microsoft has announced the appointment of former Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise, Satya Nadella, as new CEO. He joined Microsoft in 1992 from Sun Microsystems, and while his focus has primarily been in the developer and enterprise world, he’s seen and supported his company’s attempt to capture the consumer market with Xbox, Windows 8 and Surface.
Retiring Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, said, “I’ve had the distinct privilege of working with the most talented employees and senior leadership team in the industry, and I know their passion and hunger for greatness will only grow stronger under Satya’s leadership.” Nadella will also join the Microsoft’s Board of Directors.
Bill Gates, former Microsoft CEO and until recently Chairman of the Board, will begin a new role within Microsoft as “Founder and Technology Advisor.” According to a release, Gates will “devote more time to the company, supporting Nadella in shaping technology and product direction.”
Former lead independent director of the Board, John Thompson, will take over as Director.
Nadella, while an internal choice, is not a controversial one: he is level-headed and thoughtful, and will contrast Steve Ballmer’s garish and explosive public persona. At the same time, he was considered one of the only candidates capable of reigning in a company of Microsoft’s size and breadth.
Hopefully he’ll continue to encourage the growth of Windows Phone in the mobile space.
