Royal Bank of Canada brings its RBC Mobile app to Windows Phone 8, first major Canadian bank to do so

The Royal Bank of Canada, the country’s largest bank by market cap and number of customers, has finally released an official mobile app for Windows Phone.

Supporting Windows Phone 8, RBC Mobile allows customers of the bank to see account information and transaction history, transfer funds, pay bills and locate branches.

The app even allows users to send Interac E-Transfers to friends and family, even if they’re not at the same bank.

Though the app’s design doesn’t appear remarkable for a Windows Phone app, it must be noted that RBC is the only major Canadian bank to commit to Microsoft’s platform; TD Canada Trust irked Windows Phone users last year when it claimed there aren’t enough users to justify the development and support costs.

Hopefully, as a market leader in Canada, RBC’s move will spur other banks to create apps for the platform. While ING Direct customers have had a Windows Phone app since 2012, it also hasn’t been updated since then, either. And if monitoring account information is more your style, Intuit-owned Mint recently came out with an excellent Windows Phone app.
