The latest report by research firm IDC has once again showed that Android and iOS are leading the way in market share. This has been the case for the past few year and IDC calculates that both platforms combined represent a whopping 95.7% of the market, up from 4.5% in a year, and helped the industry surpass the 1 billion mark for device shipments in 2013. Google’s Android OS dominates 78.1% and Apple with 17.6% in Q4 – this is of course based on devices shipped and would be even better to understand how many of those units sold.

Windows Phone OS slightly increased by 0.04% to own 3% of the market, while Waterloo-based BlackBerry significantly dropped from 3.2% last year to 0.6% market share in 2013. IDC notes that “BlackBerry was the only operating system to realize negative year-over-year change both for the quarter (-77.0%) and for the year (-40.9%).” However, with the renewed enterprise focus “BlackBerry may in a better position, but still finds itself having to evangelize the new platform to its user base.”
