Chinese manufacturer, Oppo, unveiled its latest high-end smartphone today, and by its name one would be forgiven for thinking the Find 7 refers to the device’s screen size. Instead, as a sequel to the Find 5, it offers one of the first 2560×1440 pixel displays in a 5.5-inch frame which, at 538ppi, makes it the most pixel-dense smartphone ever created.
The device, which will retail in May or June for $599 US, is not just a pretty face, either: it comes with a 2.5Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 32GB of internal storage and a microSD slot, 3GB of RAM, a 3000mAh battery with ultra-fast charging, and a 13MP rear camera that, using software tweaks, takes 10 photos in quick succession to create a giant 50MP canvas. The phone uses a proprietary rapid charging technology dubbed VOOC that promises to deliver 75% of the 3000mAh cell’s charge in 30 minutes without overheating.
Though Oppo’s North American presence is virtually non-existent, the Find 7 is the second device, after the recently-announced N1, that will attempt to break down those barriers. When it hits the market later this year, it will run on a variety of North American LTE bands, including those available in Canada, and should be accessible to the average Android user out of the box. Without a CyanogenMOD version in site, users will have to make do with Oppo’s Color OS, a skin on top of Android 4.3 that, while muted and somewhat confusing at first glance, is not a heavy piece of software. Oppo traditionally opts for some Samsung-like gimmicks, and the Find 7 has plenty, including the ability to wave the phone around in the air to enable the camera.
The carbon fiber backing, pulsing bottom LED light, 4K video recording at 30fps and a 5MP front-facing camera round out this package that is likely more intriguing than desirable, but we’ll do our best to get our hands on a demo unit when it comes available.
