Nokia announces the Lumia 930, 630 and 635 running Windows Phone 8.1

As expected, Nokia announced a few new Lumia devices today, as part of the Windows Phone 8.1 launch.

Up first is the 5-inch Lumia 930, a true successor to the Lumia 920 and the first flagship device from Nokia running WP8.1. Like the Verizon-exclusive Lumia Icon, the 930 sports a 1080p display, a 2.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, a 20MP rear PureView camera with hardware stabilization and ZEISS optics, and a 1.2MP wide-angle front facing camera.

And, like the Lumia Icon and 1520 before it, the 930 offers four directional microphones for better noise cancellation and truer voice recording.

The Lumia 930 is shipping with 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and wireless charging, along with an aluminum frame and metal accents on the side, quad-band LTE and Bluetooth 4.0. There’s also a 2420mAh battery inside.

Launching in June in Europe, Asia and Latin America, expect the Lumia 930 to arrive in Canada — if it does at all — closer to July or August. It will come in four colours, including white, black, orange and a beautiful new green hue. It will cost roughly $599 USD outright, which is lower than the Lumia 920 when it was introduced in 2012.

Next up are the Lumia 630 and 635, variants of the same hardware. We’ll likely only see the Lumia 635 in Canada, as that low-cost model is the only one of the two to sport LTE connectivity.

A 4.5-inch 800×480 pixel ClearBlack LCD display and hot-swappable backs in a variety of colours complement a quad-core 1.2Ghz Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 5MP rear camera without a flash. There will be 8GB of internal storage and a microSD slot as well. Rounding out the specs is a 1830mAh non-removable battery.

The Lumia 635 will debut worldwide in May for around $189 USD, though no word on specific Canadian pricing or availability.

As for improvements to the Lumia software itself, Nokia announced a new feature and complementary SDK called SensorCore, a lower-power background process to  “enable the next generation of exercise and exploration apps like Bing Health and Fitness, which provides real-time monitoring and data storing like steps taken, calories burned, and miles walked, all day.”

Expect further improvements to the camera experience on both the Lumia 930 and 635 with a new Imaging SDK and big updates to Creative Studio and Storyteller.
