Uber heads for cottage country, launches UberBOATS in Muskoka

Uber, the smartphone app that brings you on-demand taxis in Toronto and Montreal, has taken a different route to earn its loyalty and success. The company helps taxi limo drivers earn a bit more money and also give a bit more freedom for its users by offering unique features, such as fair splitting and various payment options.

Uber has been known to do wacky stunts for publicity — like delivering ice cream to hungry Torontonians. This coming long weekend, Uber is taking to the high waters and heading north. The company will launch its on-demand water-taxi service called UberBOATs in Muskoka. This is a similar service Uber has going on in Amsterdam and Sydney.

Uber stated in an email to us that this is the “first foray into cottage country.” Starting this long weekend, and all future long weekends, UberBOATs will charge $1.00 per minute with a minimum fare of $20. The hours of availability are from 5:00pm – 1:00am Friday, and between 11:00am – 1:00am on Saturday/Sunday. Currently this water taxi service is limited to Lake Rosseau and Joe, but more lakes are on the map.

UberBOATS operates in the same manner as the taxi service in the city. To use it you’ll have to download the Uber app for iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry and select the “UberBOAT” option.
