Pocket Premium takes on Evernote by permanently archiving your content

Popular content clipping and internet archival tool Pocket unveiled a premium tier today, intended to compete with Evernote’s increasing market share encroachment.

While the core of the product’s functionality will remain free, Pocket Premium adds permanent archiving — offline caching, essentially — so users avoid the disappointment of revisiting saved pages that have either been changed or deleted. The $4.99/month, $44.99/year feature also adds global search, which allows for word or tag search throughout one’s entire archive, and suggested tags to make list organization easier.

Like Instapaper’s subscription tier, Pocket Premium is likely only going to appeal to power users, but will grow in features and going forward will likely sport additions before regular users. With Premium, though, Pocket is clearly going after Evernote, which boasts a number of similar features, like Offline Notebooks, global search and document collaboration, for a similar $5/$45 price.

Pocket 5.5, which is available today for iOS and Android, also improves tag management for all users.
