Samsung unveils the 8.4 and 10.5-inch Galaxy Tab S with high-res Super AMOLED displays

Samsung has already unveiled a slew of tablets this year, such as the Galaxy Tab4, TabPRO and the NotePRO series. At the GALAXY Premiere 2014 event in New York, Samsung unleashed another couple additions to the mix. Entering the market are the 8.4 and 10.5-inch Galaxy Tab S tablets, which both sport a WQXGA (2560×1600) Super AMOLED displays.

As for its overall design, the Tab S tablets will come in “titanium bronze” or “dazzling white” and have a similar backing to the Galaxy S5, and yes, the familiar physical home button on the front. What’s impressive about the tablets are how thin they are. Samsung has dubbed the Tab S as being the “thinnest and lightest tablet to date” as they both come in at 6.6mm, and only 465g (10.5-inch) and 294g (8.4-inch). As for specs, included in the slates is a 1.9GHz quad + 1.3GHz octa-core Samsung Exynos 5 processor, 3GB RAM, 16/32GB of built-in storage, an 8MP camera and a 2.1 front-facing camera. The 8.4-inch Tab S has a 4,900mAh battery, while the 10.5-inch model is bumped up to a 7,900mAh — which reportedly gives up to 11-hours of battery life.

The Galaxy Tab S comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat and Samsung’s refined tablet Magazine UX, now called Papergarden, which gives users access to a bunch of reputable media partners (Condé Nast and National Geographic). Samsung has also upped the ante on content and partnered with Marvel for three months of unlimited free comics. In addition, Kindle for Samsung will also bring a free book to your tablet every month.

There is no word yet on a Canadian release, but pre-orders for the Wi-Fi versions will go live in the States next month. The Tab S 8.4 will cost $399 and the Tab S 10.5 costs $499.
