Google might reveal CarPlay competitor at I/O next week

Google Auto Link Audi S8

A report from AutoNews is claiming that Google plans to introduce an in-car system at the company’s I/O conference next week to compete with Apple’s CarPlay. However, rather than a dedicated OS integrated with the car, Google’s solution, which it’s calling Auto Link internally, would allow Android smartphones to project data to the vehicle’s dashboard screen. The car’s internal controls would also be able to navigate projected Google services.

AutoNews is not expecting Google to announce any specific cars that will support Auto Link next week, but it will be the first product of the Open Automotive Alliance, of which Google, Nvidia, Honda, GM, Audi, and Hyundai are a part. We’ll hopefully know more for certain after I/O.
